PhD Candidate in structural geology, field mapping, data integration and 3D modelling - Trondheim, Norge - Norwegian University of Science and Technology

Norwegian University of Science and Technology background
    Temporary
    Beskrivelse

    About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The announced PhD position is associated with an ongoing research project focusing on reconstructions of the structural architecture of long-lived zones of crustal weakness that have multiple deformation and reactivations phases in ductile and brittle structural regimes and the influence of these zones on sedimentary basins evolution and an impact on modern and ancient fluid flow.

The successful candidate will develop an individual approach to the PhD project. The overall aim is to integrate data from own field work with publicly available geological and geophysical data. The goal is to construct, a three-dimensional model of a long-lived zone of crustal weakness architecture that will allow to reconstruct and restore its structural evolution. The principal field areas are onshore and offshore in mainland Norway and Svalbard.

Your immediate leader is Head of department.

    Duties of the position

The main tasks of the PhD candidate will include:

  • Multi-scale field-based and digital mapping of individual fault systems, their cores and deformation zones with datasets of varying resolutions (from outcrop to regional scale).
  • Analysis of faults expression in diverse geological and geophysical datasets (e.g. seismic, magnetic and gravity data).
  • Assessment of tectonostratigraphic evolution of sedimentary basins adjacent to the studied fault zones
  • Creation of a 3D model of present fault zone architecture.
  • Reconstruction/modelling of past architectures.
  • The PhD candidate will be working at the IGP Department in Trondheim, Norway. Shorter scientific stay abroad and within Norway will be encouraged.

    Required selection criteria

  • You must have a professionally relevant background in structural geology, geological mapping and 3D modelling or tectono-stratigraphy, alternatively a background in geosciences with a strong geology background.
  • You must hold a MSc in Geology (structural geology, sedimentary basin analysis, geological mapping or modelling, subsurface architecture) or a related directly relevant subject.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented by the date of appointment.
  • You must have good written and oral English language skills.
  • The appointment is to be made in accordance with and

    Preferred selection criteria

We will evaluate the documented experience of the candidates using the following criteria:

  • A general knowledge of field and digital mapping and subsurface modelling.
  • Extensive experience from field work, especially in harsh and/or polar climates.
  • Working with 3D geomodelling (e.g. Petrel, Move, Leapfrog) and GIS software (QGIS, ArcGIS).
  • Previous experience in integrating diverse type of data, such as processing and interpretation of digital outcrop models, structural data, sedimentological data, seismic interpretation, or borehole data analysis as well as in 3D data visualization.
  • Knowledge of the geological evolution of Norway and/or Svalbard or work on evolution of tectonic structures.
  • Additionally, scientific writing including authorship of scientific publications and presentation at scientific conferences is beneficial. Some of the field work will rely on the candidate raising external funds through Arctic Field Grants, so previous funding acquisition success is also beneficial.
  • Personal characteristics

The successful applicant is a creative and curious geoscientist able to work independently, in a structured manner. She/he should demonstrate good collaborative skills and willingness to be part of a research group. Motivation and personal suitability will be emphasized. To allow assessment of this, a statement of personal and scientific interest in taking a Ph.D. degree, including an outline of a PhD project idea, must be included in the application.

Emphasis will be placed on personal and interpersonal qualities, including:

  • Willingness to learn new fields in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Problem solver, with ability to use existing knowledge in new ways.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • We offer

  • exciting and stimulating tasks in a strong international academic environment
  • an open and with dedicated colleagues
  • favourable terms in the
  • Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in engineering () within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
