    Beskrivelse

    About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

We are looking for a 3-year PhD candidate within the cutting-edge field of "Hybrid Manufacturing Processes".

In this position, new hybrid processes (chains) enabled by solid-state additive manufacturing, formative and subtractive processing methods will be investigated to enable high-performance manufacturing of components using recycled aluminum alloys. In addition, you will investigate the process behaviors, mechanisms, models, and smart control strategies in the hybrid processes.

The strategic PhD position is linked to NTNU Aluminium Product Innovation Center (NAPIC) and MANULAB – Norwegian manufacturing research infrastructure, where advanced processes such as aluminium forming, welding, additive manufacturing (AM), subtractive processing, hybrid processing, etc., are focused to develop competitive and sustainable manufacturing technologies.

You will be also directly or indirectly related to industrial research projects primarily directed towards aluminium manufacturing for EVs, seeking to innovate within lightweight applications such as battery trays, chassis and suspension systems, safety/crashworthiness systems, etc.

The ambition of your PhD project is to contribute to the strategic blueprint of sustainable manufacturing of recycled aluminium through innovative research.

Your immediate leader is Associate Professor Jun Ma.

    Duties of the position

  • develop and prototype new hybrid manufacturing processes (chains) by using solid-state additive manufacturing, formative, and subtractive processing methods
  • test and validate the developed new hybrid processes with recycled aluminium alloys and typical components
  • perform mechanical and microstructural testing, characterization and analysis to assess the properties and performance of components produced by hybrid processes
  • investigate the process behaviours, mechanisms and models to improve the process capabilities of hybrid manufacturing
  • conduct and publish high-level research at peer-reviewed journals and international conferences to qualify for PhD career
  • take part in the mandatory PhD research education programme
  • Required selection criteria

  • you must have a professionally relevant background in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Materials Processing
  • your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • you must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
  • you must meet the requirements for admission to
  • documented strong background in process development in metal forming, friction stir welding or additive manufacturing
  • excellent written and oral English
  • The appointment is to be made in accordance with and

    Preferred selection criteria

  • knowledge and testing skills in mechanical properties and microstructure of aluminium alloys
  • experience in the design and development of machine tools
  • experience in CNC machine operation
  • experience with modelling of material, process, or product behavior (like using analytical, finite element (FE) analysis, data-driven modelling approaches)
  • Personal characteristics

  • highly motivated, independent and enthusiastic
  • strong ability to systematically carry out goal-oriented work
  • enjoy interdisciplinary research
  • keen interest in learning and working in teams
  • good skills to deliver oral and written presentation of research results
